1 Chapter (Genesis 1:1-31)

Genesis:

(Greek) "In the beginning" or "origin"

In the beginning God created:

"bara" means to create. It is used for the creating of God. This word means "to miraculously bring into existence something that did not exist."

day:

The word "tag" is used in Scripture in four meanings:

    • The part of the day of twenty-four hours which is light
    • A portion of time of twenty-four hours
    • A time designated for a specific purpose, as "Day of Atonement"
    • A longer period of time during which certain purposes of God are to be accomplished. Cf. Genesis 2:4, where the word "day" includes the whole work of creation

The "six-day work" of God includes eight works of creation, each of which is introduced by the words "and God said":

  • FIRST DAY:(1) Light and darkness, day and night
  • Second day:(2) atmosphere (firmament)
  • DIRTH DAY:(3) Land and sea separated: plants, trees
  • FOURTH DAY:(4) Sun, moon, stars: seasons
  • FIRTH DAY:(5) aquatic animals and (6)birds
  • SIXTH DAY:(6) land animals, (8)humans
  • SIXTH DAY:(7) God rests after creation is complete
  • The origin of the world and of life is no accident. There is a Creator: God.
  • God created all that is
  • Everything God created was good
  • The culmination of divine creation was the creation of man
  • Man is twofold different from all other creatures: he alone is made in God's image. And: to him is given the care of all else

Critical Questions and Statements:

Do you really believe in a creation in 6 days? Surely that took
millions of years!

Literature:

Scientifically, no one knows how many years have passed since the earth was formed. There is no physical clock that has been ticking along since creation.
