Finnish Candles

“Finnish candles for sale!” Ever since Storm Lothar, you often see signs like this along the roadside. But why buy Finnish candles when you can make them yourself?

Finnish candles, also known as Canadian candles, are a great alternative to torches and barn lanterns, as well as for campfires.

Advantages

You’re spending the night with your youth group in a cave. You could light a fire at the entrance, but the cave would fill with smoke. In situations like this, Finnish candles are just the thing! When stored properly, they burn for about ten hours. They produce much less smoke than a fire.

Production, Materials:

• Fir log (100 cm high, 30 cm in diameter)
• Chainsaw
• Ignition cube
• Lighter 

Bright candle
Using the chainsaw, cut four triple slits in a cross pattern. On a 100-cm log, the cuts are approximately 85 cm deep, so the bottom 15 cm are left uncut.

Heating Candle
Theheating candledoesn’t provide as much light, but it does provide more heat. For this candle, only eight simple slits are cut, also extending to about 15 cm above the ground. Additionally, a 5 cm deep indentation must be made in the center.

Lighting
Once the candles are prepared, they can be lit. To do this, insert the fire starter cube either into the slits or the indentation and then light it. The candle will immediately begin to radiate light and warmth.

IdeaBy the way, the Finnish candle can also be used for cooking. Instead of placing the cooking pot over a fire, simply set it on top of the Finnish candle. What else can I do but wish you “Enjoy your meal!”
