Mason's Knot

Submitted by Ramba on

The mason's knot is suitable for attaching to trees or for hauling beams and logs with a rope. It is a tapered loop and holds only under tension. The knot is also called a carpenter's knot.

Instructions

Pass the rope once around the tree (possibly attach a tree protection before!).

|||

Form a loop around the rope, make sure that the loop is not "under tension".

|||

Wrap the end of the rope in the opposite direction than in step 1 around the rope. You must wrap more than half of the tree. At the end you should leave at least 20cm of rope in front and secure the end with a normal knot ("Grossmüeti").

||

The hauling rope should run as straight as possible out of the knot, otherwise the knot can slip and thus lose tension.
